The Importance of Patch Testing

What is Patch Testing?

Patch testing is a method of determining if an ingredient or the ingredients in something cause an adverse reaction. Even a product you may have used before can trigger a reaction if the formulation has been changed. However, in this case, I am talking about a product that is topically applied, that is applied to the skin or hair, and you have never used it before.

Signs of a Reaction

A reaction can include redness, itching, swelling, burning, hives, in other words; your skin doesn\'t like it!

Method

The crook of your elbow or, if testing dyes or tints for the hair, brows or eyelashes, the skin on the scalp behind your ear are good places to patch test. Make sure the area being used is clean and dry. Apply a small amount of the product to be tested, let it dry and leave it unwashed and undisturbed for 24 hours. If the patch remains clear, you should be good to go.
Disclaimer

I am not a health care professional. Be aware that patch testing is not foolproof. If you have concerns regarding a new product, please use common sense and read the ingredient labels. If in doubt, consult your doctor or other qualified medical professional.

It is generally advised that the use of essential oils be avoided during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, nursing or have an on-going medical condition, please consult your doctor or health care professional.
