Yule

The shortest day marks the beginning of the season of Yule and the Winter Solstice. December 21st is the shortest day of the year, but from there, daylight beings to lengthen. Its thought Yule is Norse in origin, but pagan religions have numerous beliefs and observances.

One that I particularly like is bringing in the Yule log. Originally the log was an entire tree with the largest end put into the fire to burn through the 12 day celebration. The log was lit from the remains of the previous year's Yule log and it was important that at the end of the observances, the remaining log was put away to be used again next year.

The other legend I love is the story of the Holly King and the Oak King. The Holly King represents Winter and the solstice marks the beginning of his reign until Spring comes and brings with it the reign of the Oak King, so the seasons come and go as intended.

Happy Yule!
