Happy Solstice

The Summer Solstice arrived at 3:57 a.m. today. Also known as the Longest Day, it marks the beginning of Summer in the Northern Hemisphere. From here on, the Earth's axis will slowly start to tilt away from the Sun, moving us into Fall and eventually Winter.

There was the usual celebration at Stonehenge in Wiltshire. I know there is a lot of myth and legend around the site; who built it, exactly when was it built, how did they do it, what's the significance of the site.

I found out something about this place that surprised me; the stones there now are fiberglass replicas of the originals! The original stones were moved in 1981 to Albion Colliery in Wales. There was concern about deterioration of the stones so the decision was made to move them and put the replicas in their place. The copies were made by a Spanish company which is no longer is in business. Take away from that what you will. And for those who say the replica story is a lie - its been confirmed by English Heritage. Take it up with them if you feel the need to argue about it.

I've been to Stonehenge and .... it was bit underwhelming. The site is nowhere near as large as it appears in photos and now I know its a replica, well .....  But loads of people visit it, especially this time of year, and enjoy it so what do I know.

Regardless, welcome Summer!

  1. Happy Summer Solstice! The stones at Stonehenge have certainly been restored and conserved, but that's all that the English Heritage site says. I think people would have noticed if those massive stones were switched for fakes in the middle of the night, LOL! Good story though.
